Description

Agave americana ‘Variegata, commonly known as the Variegated Century Plant, is a bold, dramatic succulent prized for its massive architectural form and striking cream-and-green foliage. Its broad blue-green leaves are edged with bright creamy-yellow margins, creating powerful contrast and year-round visual impact. This large-growing agave forms an impressive rosette that can reach 6–8 feet wide with leaves extending up to 4 feet long. Its commanding presence makes it ideal as a focal point in desert, Mediterranean, and waterwise landscapes across the Southwest.

Extremely drought tolerant once established, Variegated Century Plant thrives in hot, dry climates with full sun exposure and excellent drainage. The vibrant variegation intensifies in bright light, adding bold color to gravel gardens, slopes, and large open landscape spaces. At maturity, the plant produces a towering flower stalk that can reach 15–25 feet tall, crowned with clusters of yellow blooms — a spectacular display before completing its natural life cycle.

Choose a sunny location with excellent drainage. Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball and place the plant so the base of the rosette sits level with the soil surface. Backfill gently, firm the soil, and water lightly. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid planting in poorly drained or waterlogged soil.

Agave americana ‘Variegata’ is a dramatic, architectural succulent known for its blue-green leaves edged with creamy yellow margins and sharp terminal spines. It thrives in full sun and well-draining soil and is extremely drought-tolerant once established.

Water sparingly and only when the soil is fully dry. Fertilization is rarely needed. Remove damaged or aging leaves as necessary. At maturity, the plant produces a tall flowering stalk; after flowering, the main rosette declines while offsets (pups) continue to grow.

Ideal for homeowners, landscapers, and property managers looking to improve their landscape with healthy, professionally grown plants. Perfect for creating privacy, shade, color, and structure while enhancing curb appeal and outdoor living spaces.

1. How often should I water a Variegated Century Plant?

Water sparingly. Once established, occasional deep watering is enough. Overwatering can cause root rot.

2. Does Agave americana ‘Variegata’ bloom only once?

Yes. Like all century plants, it blooms once after many years, then the main rosette dies.

3. How big does this plant get?

It typically grows 6–10 feet tall and 8–12 feet wide, making it best suited for spacious landscapes.

4. Is this plant suitable for containers?

It can be grown in large containers when young, but eventually needs ample space due to its size.
